M’Lady ready for N.I. campaign
M’Lady proved her fitness for motor races In the next two months when she won the Lord Shannon Cup final from a good field of progressive greyhounds at the Christchurch club's equalisator meeting on Saturday.
It wa* the last race for the light fawn Radara—Moss Patches bitch in Christchurch for at least six weeks. M’Lady left yesterday for Auckland where she will compete in heats and the national final to find the New Zealand representative for the rich New South Wales St Leger in December. M’Lady’* owner, Mr K. Davison, said that while in Auckland she will race in the New Zealand Sires' Produce Stakes before returning to be prepared for the Canterbury Futurity Stakes and the national championships.
The pattern of the Lord Shannon Cup race had developed by the first turn. Que Serra had capitalised on the inside draw to lead down the back straight from Shanfort (rails) and M’Lady, which had been forced over some extra ground.
Approaching the home turn, Shanfort dived on the inside of Que Serra, and M’Lady went on the outside. Que Serra appeared to be squeezed and lost two lengths. The two high-class youngsters were on even terms down the straight, M’Lady asserting herself in the final strides. Que Serra was a gallant third, clear of a bunch containing I’ma Tiger, Mr Christian. Copper Queen and Shady Havoc.
There had been a minor surprise in the heats when M’Lady failed by half a length to overhaul the pace-setter, Shady Havoc. Mr J. Walsh’s promising black dog failed to show the same dash in the final, but was affected by its muzzle getting eaught in its teeth. Mr Walsh will be represented in the heats of the New South Wales St Leger by Sally Havoc, Rex Havoc and Star Havoc. Like Shady Havoc they are from the same Planet—Debbie Havoc Utter.
Rex Havoc was the most impressive maiden winner and Sally Havoc revealed stamina in the puppy stakes, beating Royal
[Mint In a sustained battle. Star [Havoc was placed in its two | starts. The South Island champion, I Tip Top, maintained her bril- ' liant recent form with a com- ; fortable win in the first open flat. Tip Top quickly reached the [lead and she thwarted all challenges. Beni Llid finished strongly I along the rail for second just ahead of Red Baron, which made much ground in the latter stage. The time was a fast 25.5 secs. Red Baron made no mistake In the second event for open dogs. He began better than ! usual, went clear down the back, and was four lengths ahead at the finish. Lady Dawn held second throughout, and Johnny : Madrid finished slightly better ! than Ariki for third. Results:— Non-equallsator [ Puppy Stakes.—Royal Mint (Miss V. Barnes and Mrs L.
