Gymnasium subsidy
The Minister of Education (Mr Amos) has granted Burnside High School a $45,000 subsidy to build a second gymnasium, the secretary of the school board of governors (Mr P. J. Halligan) said. In a letter to the board the Minister said that the large roll at the school (1758) was one of the main reasons for granting the subsidy. As well, the Department of Education would bear the full cost of standard changing-rooms. He would write to the Minister of Recreation and Sport (Mr Walding) to see if he could grant additional funds for the project. The headmaster (Mr A. D. Hunter) said that the construction of the gymnasium, which will cost about $90,000 if the larger of the two proposed sizes — 6000 sq. ft — is decided upon, will be supervised by the Ministry of Works. The parents committee had suggested that a fund-raising committee be set up and favoured a debenture system, Mr Hunter said. Bond money More than $Bl million is now invested in bonus bonds, compared with just over $62 million at the same time last year, the registrar of the Bonus Bonds Centre in Dunedin (Mr O. M. McManus) said. He said that the rate of growth had been steady as expected. The total handed out in prize money is $6,864,440 representing 346,268 prizes. — (P.A.)
