Pianoforte recital

Rosemary Miller - Stott, whose splendid playing as an accompanist is hard to evaluate adequately, gave a piano recital in the University Hall, playing the first four of Bach’s Three-part Inventions (Nos. 5, 6,9, and 15). These were stylishly performed, with excellent clarity and niceties of phrasing and of atmospheres. Inventions Nos. I, 11, and IV, by Petrassi were often humorous, frequently mischievous, and always dramatic. They were played with firm and clear touch, and with a rich welling-up of spirit. The writing is vital and sparkling, and was so played. Schoenberg’s "Suite for ' Clavier" is a work of severe and dashing astringency, , dramatic in form and in sharp contrasts. Mrs MillerStott created tense and, at times, formidable textures of sound and gave a faithful and compelling performance. The whole programme was well chosen, and was of high musical standard. —C.F.B.
