Need for more metallurgists
New Zealand needed to employ and produce more metallurgists, a meeting of metallurgists and engineers was told at the University of Canterbury Dr W. E. Duckworth. British president of the Institution of Metallurgists, said: that New Zealand should be educating 30 metallurgists: each year. In Japan 10 to 70 metallurgists graduated per Im, population, he said. At pre-j sent no universities in the! country offered a degree ini the subject, although some; engineering courses covered parts of it Failures in the meta! industry which could lead to; loss of life and serious: environmental problems! could be avoided with a little: more expertise in the field.
Dr Duckworth said that the Government could provide a lead to private industry in New Zealand by employing more metallurgists.
