Setback for Centrepoint

Centrepoint, the proposed social and recreation centre for Christchurch women, was negotiating to buy the former sports goods factory at 200 St Asaph Street which has been bought by Mr L. Edwards. The Tuam Street clothing factory destroyed by fire last week-end was owned by Mr Edwards. Centrepoint’s president Mrs J. Pluck, said yesterday that she was amazed when the sale was announced. Centrepoint was intending to lease the building with the right to purchase, and had already consulted an architect about the plans. Centrepoint hopes to offer educational opportunities, welfare assistance, sports facilities and hobby groups. “Our 2500 members will be very disappointed at this setback,” said Mrs Pluck, “but the executive is well aware of the urgency of finding a suitable property.”
