“Press” chess problems
The increasing number of matches being received for ad judication in “The Press” schools' chess competition has become disconcerting.
! Seventeen games required I adjudication from the sixth i round of the tournament last iweek. Five matches were rejceived from one contest and lin three instances the players had not made 30 moves. Some matches should not have been sent in for adjudication. If the players cannot reach a d ecision, the team captains should determine the outcome, especially in matches that do not affect the over-all result. Christchurch Boys' HighSchool A retained >ts unbeaten record in zone one when it beat its nearest challenger, Christ’s College A, 4--14. With one round remaining in the preliminary competition, Christ’s College is half a point ahead of Shirley Boys’ High School A, which recorded its fourth successive win last week. Both schools have won 19| individual matches.
However, Christ’s College should beat Rangiora this week and qualify for the final.
In zone two, Burnside High School started on a ! bad note when its board I three member, A. Novis, was injured in a motor-cycle (accident and defaulted nis ■match. But the team overcame I that set-back to account for 'Papanui and ensure itself a place in the final with Christchurch Boys’ ’ High School B
The two unbeaten schools in the B section, Christchurch B.H.S. C and Christ’s College B will meet in the last round to decide the title. Christchurch B must win the contest because it I was held to a draw in the Ififth round.
