Spectacular ski run by R.N.Z.A.F. men
(From Out Own Reporter) TIMARU. A spectacular ski run to the De La Beche corner at the junction of the Rudolf and Tasman glaciers by a Royal New Zealand Air Force group carrying out survival training in the Mount Cook National Park was a highlight of a course organised by Alpine Guides, Ltd.
Alpine Guides manager (Mr G. T. M. Wills) said that those involved comprised the second group of airmen to have been involved in the course.
The men arrived at Mount Cook on Thursday, carried
out snowcraft in the lower Caroline Icefall that day, and on Friday did crevasse rescue training in the Tasman glacier. On Friday afternoon they were airlifted by Iroquois helicopter to Fergie’s Knob, a 6000 ft peak behind the Ball Hut, where they built snowcaves and igloos. “It was a beautiful night,” said Mr Wills.
The men were flown back by helicopter on Saturday morning, and then taken to the Tasman Saddle (8021 ft where they carried out glacier training and crevasse rescue before the exhilirating “grand finale” on skis.
