Hang gliding off balloon
Depending on the weather, a hot-air balloon will be used to lift up Mr R. M. Poynter, of Auckland, and his hang glider from a farm at Darfield this morning in a very unusual combination of aeronautics. Mr Poynter said yesterday that a hot-air balloon, piloted by Flight Lieutenant R. Parsons, would lift up the hang glider and himself to 10,000 feet, and he would then glide down. Mr Poynter, who has been hang gliding for two years, says he has two unofficial hang-gliding records — the Australian and New Zealand soaring record, of four hours, which he set in Takapuna, and the world distance record of 24 miles. If the week-end attempt is successful, Mr Poynter says he will try to break the altitude record in about two months.
Snake in Auckland.—A yellow-bellied sea snake about a foot long, believed to have'been killed by a cat, was found on the porch of a Glen Eden home on Wednesday. It is a venomous variety sometimes found on northern coasts, but rarely so far inland.—(P.A.) ,
