FIRE SERVICE COUNCIL

WELLINGTON, July 5. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr May) today announced membership of the three-man Fire Service Commission which is to replace the Fire Service Council.

The members are Mr J. K. Hunn, chairman, who is chairman of the Fire Service Council; Mr W. J. Henderson, the Chief Fire Officer, Wellington; and Mr F. A. Hardy, Chief Fire Officer. Christchurch. The secretary will be Mr W. A. Glue, of Wellington.

The commission will come into being on August 1. and the members will hold office for five years.

■ Mr Hunn held a number of senior Government posts before his retirement in 1966. Mr Hardy’s career in the New Zealand fire service began in 1949 when he joined the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade after three years with the National Fire Service in Britain. DUNDEDIN POST He was appointed Deputy Chief Fire Officer in Dunedin in 1955, and became Chief Fire Officer there in 1961. He was appointed Chief Fire Officer, Christchurch, in 1969. A member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, he was elected president of its New Zealand branch for 1957. He was awarded Queen’s Fire Service Medal in 1971. He has been prominent in civil defence planning in the southern region and has also ;been an instructor in practical firemanship for the New Zealand Technical Correspondence Institute.
