Exhibition of photography
( Leith Jennings and Jim i Payne jointly show their' work in an exhibition of (photography at the Canterj bury Society of Arts Gallery. Leith Jennings was bom in Canada in 1937 and is now teaching art at Queen Eliza-, i beth College, Palmerston .North. Bom at Lyttelton in ; 1947, Jim Payne works as a i photo printer at the National (Publicity Studios in Wellingi ton, and has exhibited on five (previous occasions.
I Neither photographer takes (much in the way of liberties (with the medium, prefering ■lto seek out subjects to ’freeze, the camera- being used as a mechanical device (to provide the means. Payne shows a preference for boats, buildings, and reflections, while Jennings portrays people mostly unconsciously attending to their day-to-day affairs. There is a touch of humour in Jennings’s symmetrical arrangement of two cats on a gararge roof, but altogether it is a serious portrayal of a country and its people. The exhibition will remain open until July 25. —G.T.M.
