‘Gesture of defiance'

(A Z. Press Assih latioii) HAMILTON

Dr Brian Edwards, wno recently resigned from the Labour Party, would probably regret his action later, said the secretary of the Labour Party (Mr J. L. Wybrow). “It is seen more as a gesture of defiance and of public protest over fairly insignificant issues,” Mr Wybrow said today. “Dr Edwards would be one of the few who prefer to change the system from the outside rather than working from within."

Mr Wybrow said he did not see Dr Edwards gaining political harbour or any peace; of mind with any other party; because his ideologies were; incompatible with theiri views.

“Basically he still remains la Socialist, of this I am sure,” Mr Wybrow said.

“He probably has one or two other irons in the fire but I would imagine he is thinking fairly hard on his future at this stage. I would presume, for instance, that he is aware that a lot of his popularity on radio talk-back is due a great deal to calls from Labour Party people incensed by his utterances against their Government and their leaders.” Mr Wybrow said this interest would now fade.
