S. Africans in dispute

(N Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) NAPLES.

The entire South African team walked out of an international athletics meeting in Naples after a dispute over its country's apartheid policies involving other African athletes.

Competitors from Uganda, Kenya and Tunisia taking part in the meeting of 23 nations refused to take part in the same events as South Africans.

In an attempt to overcome this difficulty the organisers of the meeting at the San Paolo Stadium tried to compromise by preventing South African athletes meeting other Africans. This would have involved the South Africans giving up certain events.

The South African team walked out after one of its athletes was asked to take part in the 800 metres instead of the 5000 metres for which he was entered.
