Liquor in defence
Sir,—As your editorial "Liquor in defence” states, this untenable plea is being used increasingly by lawyers successfully in prosecutions for all types of criminal charges. The furtive drug pusher when caught is harshly dealt with, rightly so, but for every user by drug addiction there would be a thousand killed, maimed, and ruined, by addiction to alcohol. Police chiefs and doctors agree liquor is responsible, directly or indirectly, for the carnage on our roads. It fills the old people’s homes and prisons and is the main cause of broken homes and delinquent children. Hotel bars and their environs are areas where most of the knifing, bashing, mugging and violent assaults occur, and in criminal cases such as these, the lawyer’s plea is usually that his client was affected by liquor. The law should be amended so that this unacceptable excuse for villainy would not be tolerated by the judiciary.— Yours etc., J. DENNEHY. Greymouth, May 18, 1974.
