South Island roads

Sir,—The inquiry into Roads Board spending launched by the Minister of Works and Development (Mr Watt) is long overdue judging by comments made by people who recently travelled from Picton to Christchurch. Being regulai users of roads in the central North Island areas, their basis for comparisons is sound. They deplored the number of oneway bridges and even in some cases having to ford rivers and steams. Perhaps their bias in favour of the North Island exaggerated their views, but surely a main route used so extensively by traffic for the inter-island ferries should compare more than favourably with some of the North Island roads. Let us hope that Mr Watt .will ensure that the county councils concerned with South Island roads on State highways will ensure that available money is spent in those areas.—Yours, etc., APOLOGETIC MAINLANDERS.
