University site
Sir,—On April 24 “The Press” published a sketch plan for the possible future use of the town site and buildings of the University of Canterbury. As apparently the plan is to be discussed at a meeting of the Community Arts Centre Steering Committee in the near future, could I ask if any provision has been made to preserve the room that Lord Rutherford used at the university, as a permanent tribute to a great man?—Yours, etc., PRESERVATION
May 12, 1974. [Mr P. D. Dunbar, chairman of the Community Arts Steering Committee, replies: “This question is still, of course, a matter for the university authorities, who predictably will have many such matters to decide before any final transfer of the buildings. The Steering Committee nas been encouraged to provide evidence of the viability of its proposals, as broadly outlined in the plan referred to, and a special team is at present engaged on this. The 'Rutherford Room’ is part of the basement structure of the university great hall dock, which will have a high priority for preservation ‘as is.* I have no doubt that the University Council or members of any other body which might in the future have some responsibility in the matter, will see to it that the historical importance of the room will be acknowledged.”]
