‘Little effect by mine’

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. Plans for an underground coalmine east of Huntly would have little environmental impact on the area, according to a report by Mines Department officials. The report has been made public by the Commis’sion for the Environment, which is inviting comment before it prepares its own report to the Cabinet. The Government is considering the development of the whole Huntly coalfield at a cost of s3om. Mines Department experts estimate that as much as 30 million tonnes of coal lies in the area north-west of the present Kimihia opencast workings. But only eight to 12 million tonnes can be extracted, the remainder having to stay to prevent caving or subsidence.
