MOVE TO PROTECT TREES

(N.Z Press Association! AUCKLAND, May 22. A by-law protecting all trees over a certain size in Auckland city is being incorporated in tile Auckland City Council’s review of its town planning district scheme.

The by-law was suggested last October by the chairman of the council’s town planning committee (Cr E. P. Salmon), who said then that it was a matter of urgency that the measure be introduced as soon as possible Today, Cr Salmon said council officers were preparing the measure for inclusion in the scheme review.

The by-law proposed by Cr Salmon would protect all trees of more than 20in circumference — about 6|in diameter — or more than 15ft high.

Owners of such trees would be unable to fell or damage them without obtaining permission from the council. The new measure will have to be advertised, and objections called for, before it can become a bylaw.
