Rubbish men go slow
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. The Auckland City Council and union representing its rubbish collectors will meet on Friday to try to solve the dispute which left some footpaths clogged with uncollected rubbish bags tonight.
After refusing to make refuse collections on Monday and Tuesday the collectors
today resumed, but at a slow work-to-rule pace. In the suburbs the slow pace evidently made little difference, and most Wednesday collections were completed as usual.
But in the central city, when the day ended only about one-third of the accumulated rubbish had been picked-up. A spokesman for the Northern Drivers’ Union, whose members are involved, with those of the Auckland Local Body Labourers’ Union, said the work-to-rule would continue until the council
agreed to resume its policy of having collections missed during the week done on Saturday at overtime rates. I There were signs that the' dispute might spread. Members of the Local: Body Labourers’ Union, who' man the city car parks.! .staged a go-slow today, and [for a time long queues of cars 'built up. Workmen at the Meola .Road rubbish tip turned [away several trucks owned [by private contractors which [were thought to have been collecting rubbish from firms lin the city.
