No U.K. move to stop tests
(N.Z.P.A. Staj! Correspondent)
LONDON, May 22.
The British Labour Government indicated today for the first time that it would not ask France to stop nuclear tests in the Pacific.
Mr David Ennals, Minister of State at the Foreign Office, told Parliament: “We are, of course, totally opposed to nuclear testing in the atmosphere, and this is well known to the French Government.” He had been asked by a Labour backbencher, Mrs Renee Short, to make representations to the French Minister, of Defence about the resumption of nuclear tests in the South Pacific in June “in the interests of the inhabitants of British territories in the area.” The former Prime Minister (Mr Heath) last year also refused New Zealand’s request to ask,the French to stop the tests at Mururoa Atoll.
The refusal by Mr Ennals to agree to make representations to Paris was seen in London as a firm sign that New Zealand and Australia will again receive no formal backing from Britain for their case against French testing, despite the change of Government.
