Road safety
Sir, —Is it an official policy of the Ministry of Transport for its officers to issue traffic offence notices while standing adjacent to the car, with the offender, on the roadway? I have seen this several times and consider it a dangerous practice. I was under the impression that road safety is the traffic officer’s main responsibility.—Yours etc., H. M. BROWN. May 11, 1974. [Mr A. Goldsmith, the Christchurch City traffic superintendent, replies: “Where an alleged offender alights from the vehicle he or she should be requested to move to the front of the vehicle for protection from approaching traffic, or preferably onto the footpath if one is available and it is practicable to do so.”]
