Hoax-call warning
The police have warned householders and businessmen to be wary of hoax telephone calls luring them away from their offices or houses. A Christchurch timber firm, W. W. Keighley and Company, Ltd. of 193 Halswell Road, had $B7 stolen yesterday after the cashier received a hoax call telling him his house was on fire.. Detective Inspector J. W. Wooders said that anyone receiving a telephone call purportedly from the police, fire brigade, or hospital should check the authenticity by telephoning back before acting on the information.
