Rail union warning from gaol
(N Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, May 20.
The Indian railways union leader, Mr George Fernandes, has declared from gaol that the 13-day-old strike by railwaymen will continue until he can meet other union leaders.
In a letter, Mr Fernandes said yesterday that the present impasse would continue as long as the Government would not allow him to meet the union’s strike action committee.
Referring to the Government’s demand that the railwaymen must return to work before pay negotiations were resumed, Mr Fernandes said that as long as the Government adopted this attitude the union would continue its strike.
The Ministry of Railways reported yesterday that a skeleton train service was operating well, and it appeared that the strike may be losing impetus after the arrest of over 15,000 strikers and the dismissal of several hundred others. Union officials said that the strike was causing workers to be laid-off in other industries because fuel supplies were not reaching them.
