SALE OF N.Z. SKILL

A New Zealand firm is selling its knowledge on coating of agricultural and horticultural seeds to a big American company.

The photograph shows Mr W. H. Ramsey (left) signing the agreement in the United States, and Mr R. C. Bradshaw (right) signing in Christchurch.

Mr Bradshaw is chairman of Coated Seed, Ltd, which is owned jointly by the Challenge Corporation and the Fruitgrowers’ Chemical Company. The firm, established 10 years ago, has one of its factories in Sockburn. Ramsey Seed Incorporated, of Monteca, 150 miles east of San Francisco, has formed a separate company, Prillcote Industries Incorporated, to manufacture and distribute coated products in the United States and Mexico.

Announcing the licensing agreement, the manager of Coated Seed, Ltd (Mr R. S. Gowans) said in Christchurch yesterday that the Americans would receive complete knowledge of his company. In return they would make a “bulk” payment, plus continuing royalty payments on : sales of processed seed in the : United States. The success of the venture would relate directly to field performance of the various products under United States conditions, Mr Gowans said, .but he was confident from his experience that results would be favourable.

“The overseas earnings from this venture could eventually exceed the level of business obtainable in New Zealand,” said Mr Gowans. Coated Seed, Ltd. treats all pasture seeds, some brassica, and many horticultural seeds. It also has a product which imparts nitrogen-fixing bacteria to plants that have

failed to produce nodules to fix their own nitrogen. aerial oversowing for land development.

Production is expected to begin in Monteca in September, and Prillcote Industries intends to sub-license other companies throughout the United States and Canada.

Technical and laboratory facilities would be established an “ the feedback to New Zealand of technical information

would be very valuable, Mr Gowans said. The New Zealand company hopes to develop similar arrangements in a number of other countries.
