Taxis demand fare increase
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 20.
Many taxi proprietors were considering direct action in support of their application for a fare increase, the secretary of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation (Mr H. McMillan) said tonight.
He said the application had been made to the Ministry of Transport on April 22.
A series of letters had been exchanged, and the Ministry
had suggested that applications be made by districts. But it would be two months before an application on this basis could be processed. “We have decided to give the Ministry one more chance,” Mr McMillan said. “If we do not get a decision one way or the other we will have to decide on further action.” Asked what form this action would take, Mr McMillan said this had yet to be decided. “But there is considerable pressure for direct action from some members already,” he said. The federation wanted the increase to cover the rise of 10c a gallon in fuel costs, the 2.7 per cent wage adjustment, the 18.5 per cent tyre price rise, and the accident compensation levy. The increases were costing taxi proprietors $9 a week, Mr McMillan said.
The federation’s executive wrote to the Ministry again today. Asked what would happen if the application were declined, Mr McMillan said his federation would appeal immediately.
