Cargo boost for Coastal Trader

Yesterday’s inward cargo by the New Zealand Shipping Corporation’s Coastal Trader showed Auckland support for the roll-on replacement for the VVanaka. On her twelfth round voyage the Coastal Trader has brought 76 containers (including eight refrigerated containers), 20 Seafreighters, four unit-lifts, and six heavy lifts. After two months and a half in service, this is an encouragement.

A much larger than usual northbound cargo has been booked from Lyttelton to Auckland, when the ship returns from Dunedin tomorrow. The Railways Department is not accepting further northbound cargo at this moment, and this could be Canterbury s best load for the Coasta, Trader.

Last week at Lyttelton, the corporation’s general manager (Mr C. H. Speight) said that equipment for the Coastal Trader was steadily coming to hand as it was manufactured. He hoped for larger cargoes but appreciated the wide publicity received. $

Leningrad seamen look favourably on New Zealand and its people, according to a bulletin just received from the Russian Embassy in Wellington. This refers specifically to the Baltic Steamship Company, which next October will mark its fifth anniversary of becoming a member of the New Zealand-European Shipping Association. Shipping officials and waterfront workers know there is more harmony, fraternisation, and good will betwen seafarers of all nations on the waterfront than all the seminars, discussion, debated, and propaganda could ever hope to Imitate.
