Emblem for Women's Year

The adoption of an official emblem for International Women’s Year in 1975 has been announced at United Nations headquarters in New York.

The emblem, consisting of a stylised dove, the biological symbol for women and the mathematical sign for equality, was shown to an international meeting of nongovernmental organisations which was meeting to consider plans for International Women’s Year.

The presentation was made by Ms Helvi Sipila, the assistant secretary-general for social development and humanitarian affairs.

The emblem will be used

on posters, banners, mastheads, postage stamps and other material connected with activities for International Women’s Year.

It was designed by Ms Valerie Pettis, aged 27, a graphic designer at Henry Dreyfuss Associates in New York. The emblem symbolises the continuing concern of the United Nations in promoting the equality of men and women throughout the world.
