Bid to curb TV thefts

A card giving proof of ownership will soon be issued to buyers of new colour television sets as a measure to help prevent stolen sets being resold. The New Zealand Radio and Television Manufacturers’ Federation has agreed to attach the cards to the labels given with every new colour television set.

The police say the cards could reduce the number of stolen sets being sold if the buyers asked to see proof of ownership. “We already know that the theft of colour television sets is being organised on a large scale and that there are people willing to buy these sets,” said Detective SeniorSergeant J. F. Brown, of Wellington. Ten television sets, mostly small or portable models, were stolen from houses and shops in Christchurch last week.
