Riding out fuel crisis
Motor-cycle transport is one way many Ashburton fanners have found to soften the blow of higher fuel prices. There were now about 650 farm motor-cycles in the Ashburton County, and at least half of these had been sold in the last 12 months, said Mr M. A. Collins, the sheep and beef officer for the. Ministry of Agriculture in Ashburton. The machines were economical and ideal for stock handling in paddocks and easier country, he said. Many stockmen were riding around farms with their dogs as pillion passengers, or being towed in a Tight trailer.
However, it was unlikely that motor-cycles would replace horses on run country. Horses were essential for handling run cattle, said Mr Collins.
