Canterbury retain bowls trophy
Canterbury easily beat Nelson, 38-10, in the A. S. Paterson Trophy indoor bowls contest in Christchurch on Saturday.
After a weak performance against Golden Bay-Motueka two weeks ago, Canterbury made a vast improvement in its singles
play and won 15 of the 16 matches against Nelson.
The first round pairs matches were shared, but Canterbury took one fours win and all the singles games to lead 16-8 at the beginning of the second round. Canterbury then had three wins and a draw in the pairs and when G. L. Barnes was the only player to lose his singles, the second round fours were a formality. The next challenger for the trophy is Marlborough, but the contest will not be held until July 6 after the completion of the South Island, New Zealand and national workingmen’s Clubs championships in Christchurch.
