(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright f NIVELLES, (Belgium). E. Fittipaldi of Brazil in a McLaren fought off a strong last-lap challenge from N. Lauda (Ferrari, Austria) to win the Belgian grand prix at the Nivelles circuit yesterday. Fittipaldi, the for.ner world champion, led the 31car race from just before the half-way mark and the win puts him at the top of the world driver’s championship with 22 points—one ahead of Lauda.
Thrilling a crowd estimated at more than 75,000, the darkhaired Brazilian seemed to have the 85-lap race in his pocket. He opened up a three-second lead on Lauda, but in the closing laps, the Austrian put on the pressure. With one lap to go the Ferrari was alongside the leading McLaren, but Fittipaldi held on to take the chequered flag half a car length ahead.
