Moves towards new library at port

Preparation of a schedule of quantities, in readiness for the calling of tenders for a new library at Lyttelton, was authorised by the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening.

On the recommendation of the finance committee, the council also decided to ask the Town Clerk (Mr R. J. Ewen) to investigate obtaining at least $50,000 for the project. The committee reported that it believed the balance of the money for the project could be found from the council’s property purchase account. The chairman of the finance committee (Cr R. H. Duff) said the council might not need to resort to a loan, but it should look at the possibility.

No refund.— The council resolved to tell the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club that it did not have the power to refund past rates paid by the club. Rubbish trucks.—lnquiries had shown that many models of rubbish truck would not be available within the next year, the council was told by the works committee. However, two quotations had been received for delivery about August, and the vehicles would cost about $15,500 complete. Cr I. G. Henderson said the works committee had to study several aspects of rubbish collection before making final recommendations. Pensioner cottages.— lt was decided that an architect should be asked to look at the proposed pensioner housing site in Exeter Street, and prepare a rough sketch of possible layouts. Lavatory problem.— The Diamond Harbour lavatories were in poor condition and should not be open to the public, the health inspector (Mr G. Le Brun) reported. Repairs would not be economic, and rebuilding should be considered, he said. The council decided to remove the old lavatories. Rubbish tip.— Changes to

the Diamond Harbour rubbish tip to make it less unsightly were recommended by the borough engineer (Mr F. Davidson) and the health inspector. Both suggested notices showing the type of rubbish which could be dumped, and alterations to the level and contours of the tip.
