Word on car fault awaited
Dealers for Ford and Holden cars are waiting for information from Australia before they call in some recent models for work on the power-steering systems.
According to a Reuter message from Melbourne, General Motors and Ford are recalling about 35,000 powersteering cars in Australia because durability tests have shown that faults can develop in the steering system. It is believed that the fault does not affect safety. The models affected are Ford, Falcon VB, Fairlane and Fairmont models built before the end of August last year, and the latest models of Holden Statesman and Premier cars.
Both Ford and General Motors obtain their powersteering gear from the Ben-
dix Corporation in Australia, and the recall is expected to cost the corporation several hundred thousand dollars. A spokesman for General Motors New Zealand, Ltd, said yesterday that the company had heard nothing from Australia about the power steering recalls, although it had received numerous inquiries from dealers about the situation. A spokesman for the Ford Motor Company of New Zealand, Ltd, said that information on the problem was being sought and an announcement would be made when more was known.
