[ L. Elder, one of the few 'blacks on the professional [golf circuit, came from two [strokes back with two holes to play for a tie and then beat P. Oosterhuis (England) with a birdie on the fourth plav-off hole to win the $150,000 Monsanto open. The American birdied the last two holes after he and the 6ft sin Englishman finished the regulation 72 holes with identical scores of 274 — 10 under par — on the 6679-yard Pensacola Country Club course. Elder had a final round of 67, and Oosterhuis, the leader since the second round, had a closing 69.
Elder holed an 18-foot putt for the birdie that clinched the title and enabled him to become the [first black player eligible to [play in the Masters tournaiment. Organisers said he [would be invited. In addition to the $30,045 [winner’s portion of the total priz.e, Elder who is 38, also became eligible for the tournament of champions in Carlsbad, California next week.
A. Geiberger was third with 276. R. J. Charles (New Zealand) had a final round of 70 for a total of 286.
Soccer.—Brazil beat Haiti, 40. before 35.000 spectators in Brasilia in their warm-up soccer match for the World Cup.
