Prosecutions for scrub

Owners of land on Cannon Hill who have not complied with Christchurch City Council demands to clear properties of grass and scrub considered a fire hazard will be prosecuted, the council decided last evening. About 500 landowners with properties in the area had been sent notices requiring them to clear potential fire dangers, but about 30 per cent of them had done nothing, the acting chairman of the council’s health and general committee (Cr P. W. Anderson) said. Recent rain had removed the immediate fire hazard,

i and clearance was no longer , as urgent as it had been, but this did not absolve landI owners from the obligations, ■ he said. [ Pay increase.— Committee ■ chairman of the Christi church City Council will now receive $8 a meeting instead of $5. The increase, permissible under the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act (1974). will take effect from July 1. Bridge repainting.—The : railings of the Moorhouse Avenue fly-over will be re- . painted, at a cost of $3559.50. The council last evening • accepted a tender for this amount for the job and also a tender of $2973 for painting the railings on the Colombo Street railway overbridge. It was the third time in the last 18 months that tenders had been called for the jobs. On the first occasion the sole tender was considered too high, and on the second no tenders were received. The tenders accen-) ted last evening, from A. F.) Btirdon. Ltd. were the onlyi ■ ones received on this occa-) II sion.

Cycle parks.— To encourage commuters to use bicycles and motor-cycles to travel to and from the city

centre, the council authorised the setting up of 16 30minute parks and eight allday parks for motor-cycles and 20 all-day bicycle stands in the central area. To make room for the new stands, 21 parking meters will be removed, although five new metered spaces for cars will be created by rearrangement of some existing cycle stands. School patrol.— The council approved the setting up of a school patrol by the West Spreydon School Committee on the pedestrian crossing outside the school entrance in Lyttelton Street. Brighton mall loan.—The council will seek permission to raise a $350,000 loan for the pedestrian mall at Seaview Road and Oram Avenue, New Brighton, and for associated parking facilities. Harewood lease.— The ) council agreed to renew the i lease for land at Christi church Airport used by the ’United States Navy.
