Bus etiquette and women’s lib
Sir,—Recently, along with several other elderly women, I stood in a crowded bus while a number of young men remained seated, a state of affairs accepted in these days of women’s lib. One of the aforesaid young men, however, wore a puce upper garment—T-shirt, singlet, tank top or whatever—across the chest of which were emblazoned in twoinch letters the words “Jesus Christ.” On first thoughts it seemed out of character for one so labelled to be anything other than kind, unselfish and chivalrous. On giving the matter further though I reached the conclusion that he must have studied the old “Book of Etiquette” which states firmly: “A gentleman must never offer his hot seat to a lady,” and that, therefore, his idea of correct behaviour must have outweighed any better feelings he may have entertained in the matter.— Yours ,etc., MARGARET HILSON.
