Cathedral Square

Sir,—l am a visitor to your city; but. I spent four years in Christchurch at secondary school 50 years ago. I have

an affection for the city and its people. I am impressed with what has been done in Cathedral Square. The Cathedral has at last the dignified surroundings it

deserves. However, I have a suspicion that one day the old Post. Office building will be knocked down and replaced by another featureless modem block. I hope this will not happen. The building may not be great I architecture, but it has a icharm of its own. Its loss would destroy the last bit of character left on the Square’s . perimeter, leaving the Cathedral surrounded by high-rise buildings.— Yours, etc., D. A. S. WARD, Wellington. April 20, 1974.
