Competition cattle
Mr R. D. Gould, of Marlow, Amberley, has written to “The Press” about comments made by Mr R. G. Macdonald, of Kaiapoi, on these pages last week on an Angus steer and a Charolais-Angus steer entered by Mr Gould in the recent Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s beef competition.
Mr Gould says that he objects to his cattle being singled out for criticism when the true facts were not mentioned. The Charolais steer was well fed on his flat farm for two years and then did not have enough fat cover to gain high points in the competition. The Angus had two years on his Mount Cass property with two cold winters without supplementary feed at all and he had too much fat at the competition. But it was completely unjust to compare one beast with the other.
“I would point out that before the droughts we entered 18 months cattle off Marlow in the weight range of 6501 b to 6801 b in the chiller type competition and these were all straight Angus,” said Mr Gould.
