Near-upset by Fairlie

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CHARLOTTE (North Carolina). The New Zealander, B. E. Fairlie, almost caused an upset when he played J. Newcombe, of Australia, yesterday in the first round at a World Championship Tennis blue group tournament at Charlotte.

Newcombe won, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, after overcoming a sec-ond-set lapse during which he lost five successive games after having taken a [5-2 lead. I Newcombe, the winner of j four World Championship [Tennis events this season, • won the first set without difficulty as Fairlie failed to keep his serves in bounds. He missed 10 of 16 first serves in one game.

The Australian kept Fairlie on the move until the second set, when Fairlie settled and broke Newcombe’s serve in two of the last five games while holding his own serve.

Newcombe, effectively combining lobs and overhead smashes, took a 4-2 lead in the third set after breaking Fairlie’s serve, but had to struggle in the eighth game of the set. ; In another first round match, the No. 3 seed, A. Metreveli (Russia) defeated 18. Phillips-Morre (Australia), 17-5, 6-2.
