Messmer in grenade incident

CX'.z'.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CORTE (Corsica), Mar. 25. A policeman detailed to help guard the French Prime Minister, Pierre Messmer, on his visit to Corsica, tossed a tear gas grenade at the Prime Minister’s official car today. The grenade rolled beneath the vehicle and exploded near to a car tarrying the French Minister of Transport and Regional Development. Olivier Guichard.

It gave off thick black smoke, but no-one was hurt.

The policeman was quickly overpowered.

Officials accompanying the Prime Minister, said they believed the policeman was suffering from “a sort of depression.” The police did not say if he was a Corsican or whether his action might have been provoked by anti-French feelings on the island, which is French territory.

Security detachments in Corsica have been reinforced by 1500 riot police from Marseilles for Mr Messmer’s visit because of fears of hostile action by Corsican autonomists. Strict measures are in force to protect the Prime Minister and his party from possible demonstrations,
