Ground water studies
A public address and discussion on the availability of ground water under the Canterbury Plains will be given at Lincoln College on Wednesday.
Dr S. Mandel, a consultant on ground water development to the New Zealand Agricultural Engineering Institute, will base his address on his last six months’ research work in Canterbury. Dr Mandel is professor of hydrology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Isjrael, and a world authority (on ground water development. He is in New Zea- | land at the invitation of the Agricultural Engineering Institute. This was initially for (three months but the period has been extended because •of the great interest shown (in his early results. I He has completed his proposals for further work for | the joint development and (use of surface and ground iwater for Canterbury Plains | irrigation. The origins of (ground water, the magnitude lof ground water storage, the (flow patterns and the depth of water have already been •looked at in general by Dr (Mandel, but he will be leaving a considerable amount of j work to be done and data to •b? obtained from existing wells.
