2000 cubs at Kaiapoi
Two thousand cubs were at the Blue Skies scout training centre, Kaiapoi, on Saturday for national cub day.
Altogether, with leaders and other adults, about 3000 persons came from as far away as Tekapo, Hokitika. Ashburton, and Cheviot. Two chefs prescribed 2401 b flour, 10 dozen eggs, 71b of baking powder and an unknown quantity of sugar to make pikelets, which were cooked by the cubs. Forty peggy square blankets had been made by the cub packs for the Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council. Judged by “Aunt Haysi,” the blankets won prizes for: Wigram 1, Ashburton 2. St James Tahu and Hinds equal 3. In a competition for pack (mascots, “Percy Penguin,” entered by St Nicolas was (first; “Scot the Skyhawk | Cub,” from Wigram, was second: and the Chertsey and ITe Arawa packs, equal third.
