“THE WALTONS”
I am a New Zealander who finds little of value in the present programmes, with the exception of “The British Empire,” “M.A.5.H.,” and “The Waltons.” It infuriates me that such a true-to-life and consistently well-acted series as “The Waltons” should be termed a “children’s programme” or “oversentimental” by your reviewer. As the second son in a family of five boys and six girls, I can assure you, through personal experience, that criticism of this programme is grossly inaccurate. My family sides with me on this issue as, like the Waltons, we have had good and bad times, are also a close-knit brood, and find sentimentality a God-given gift which binds us close together, I think a survey would show that “The Waltons” is more than a children’s programme. It is one
for the whole family. For some of us, it is also’a time to remember.
< FAMILY MAN [ln kmr issue of March 6, we referred to “The Waltons” as “a wholesome children’s programme”; there was no mention of it being oversentimental. Our correspondent might find that it is a family programme, but this is no excuse for the introduction of lurid undertones in recent episodes.— J.K.B.]
