DUNEDIN. Mafch 10.
A Dunedin structural engineer, Mr J. Hanlon, had his 'first successful flight in a hot air balloon over Mosgiel 'on Saturday morning. Mr Hanlon, with Messrs K. Lloyd and K. Jones, had been practising take-offs and landings at Taieri aerodrome. “We hadn’t intended to go across country', but things j just happened that way,” Mr Hanlon said. It was calm at the aerodrome when they took off, but the balloon began to drift. Friends could not hold the control rope, and Mr Hanlon had to give the balloon more hot air, cruising to 700 ft.
“I picked up a paddock on the Saddie Hill side of Mosgiel. and as soon as we got clear of the tow'n let her descend. The balloon had travelled six miles in about 25 minutes,” he said. He was pleased with the way the 77,000 cubic ft balloon handled. His balloon is the first of its type to be registered in New Zealand.
