Parking at airport

Money from the increased Christchurch Airport parking charges will go towards funding a parking building at the airport, Cr W. W. Massey, chairman of the airport committee of the city council, told the Chamber of Commerce.

Cr Massey and the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) had been invited to attend the chamber’s council meeting for discussion of the charges. Mr Jamieson said the charges had been introduced to inhibit use of the car park, and so delay for two or three years the necessity of erecting a parking building, while other development was made.

The old system produced $45,000 a year. The new system, which has meant the creation of five new jobs, will cost $25,000 to $30,000 to work and is expected to increase revenue to $175,000. The chamber decided to seek a reduction tn charges for short-term users of the park. '
