Nixon opened his news conference last night by congratulating Helen Thomas on her appointment as the chief White House correspondent for United Press International. “As I understand it, Miss Thomas, this is the first time in history that a woman has been selected for that high post. We congratulate you;’ Mr Nixon said. Miss Thomas, who has covered Washington for United Press international for 30 years, has spent the last 14 at the White House.
