Women's police head dies

The first woman in Britain to command and train an official force of i women police, Miss Dorothy Olivia Georgia ana Peto, died in London recently, aged 87.

Miss Peto, who was super-1 intendent of the Metropoli-I tan Women’s Police from' 1930 to 1946, was awarded an 0.8. E. and the King’s Police Medal Born in 1886. Miss Peto ! was educated at home. In her early twenties she took a keen interest in ambulance 'work, and when a demand I arose during the First World IWar for women to take up ' semi-police duties she first became deputy-director of Ithe Bristol training school I for women patrols and police and later director. After the war she was appointed defective inquiry officer to the 'Birmingham City Police. She I left that post to organise the I British Social Hygiene Council in 1925. About two years later, she was selected as director of women police patrols in Liverpool, where she remained until her appointment to take charge of rhe women’s section of the Metropolitan Police in 1930.
