The closing date- for a n pl cations in 19*4 will he April 1 and October 1 and applications are now being called for the former date The various categories of scholarship u nd fellowship offered by the Council are as detailed below POSTGRADUATE St HOI ARSHIPS Postgraduate Scholarships are intended to provide personal support for selected graduate students whose programme of research for a high er degree is in a biomedical field approved bv the Council. They are comparable the poMgradua.e scholarships t carded hv the University Grants Committee, and are intended especially for graduate research workers in appropriate fields who are contemplating a career tn medical research, and who do not qualify for other types of award offered by the Medical Research Council. T he value of the scholarships are equivalent to those awarded by the University Grants Committee (currently $2400). FELLOWSHIPS IN BIOSTATISTICS Fellowships in Biostatistics are awarded bv the Medical Research Council to suitable trainees in recognition of the need for increased recruitment of biostatisticians into medical research The minimum qualification required of applicants is an arts, science, engineering or other degree vvtih mathematics, preferably statistic-, to a reasonable level. Fellowships must be held in university de partments which the Council has approved a having the necessary facilities for theoretical and practical aspects of medical statistical training Currently this approval is limited to the Depart ment of Preventive and Social Medicine in thOtago Medical School, but exceptional! Council may approve training in other centres. The salary and general condi.ions will be de termined for each individual, but will normally be m the range of Scientific Officer, Grade I. on the Council's salary scales (currently $4114-$5065) TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS Training Fellowships are awarded to applicants who are considered well qualified to unde take research training tn medicine, dentistry and immediately related biological sciences. From ume to time the Council assists the development of certain research fields by offering fellowships for award in these fields and i i 1974 special awards vvillbe offered in the fields of Epidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology. Training Fellowships are tenable normally in universities and hospitals. Fellows may undertake teaching or clinical duties relevant to their research to a maximum extent of six hours per week. Training Fellows may study for higher degrees (M.D., D.D.S., Ph.D.) but not normally for professional examinations (M.R.A.C.P., etc.) Science graduates intending to undertake full-time Ph.D. work in a university department should mfle that the Council considers the M.R.C. Pustgraduate Scholarship to be the most appropriate award in such cases. The value of Training Fellowships is fixed for each individual, but is v uallv equivalent to current rates for graduates at the same level in the university, hospital or other >st institution.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for the support of graduates who have recently completed a degree at doctoral level and who propose to carry out research programmes in biomedn a! fields of relevance to the Council. Their purpose is to provide interim support for recently trained research workers in order to ;.!'ovv them opportunity to gain further experience in tneir chosen field and for the quality of their work to become known to the scientific community. For this rea son the tenure of these awards is limited to 12 months. A pre-requisite for award is the recent com pletion of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent degree, although the Corneil will accept applications from persons not yet qualified for the award of such a degree provided that the necessary examination reqv' lents have already been met. Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable within New Zealand in universities, hospitals or other suitable research institutions, and the value of the fellowships is generally equated to that of similar awards offered by New Zealand universities. SENIOR FELLOWSHIPS Senior Fellowships are intended to support trained investigators who I ave shown ability to initiate and carry out independent research in any branch of science related to human health. Candidates are expected to have completed a postgraduate degeee — (M.D., Ph D. or the equivalent) and to have followed this with at least three years research training. Appointments will be made largely on the strength < research attainments. Senior Fellowships are tenable only in New Zealand, in universities, in hospitals and in other institutions approved by the Council. Appointments are made for an initial period of three years and may be renewable for a further period of one or two years. The initial salary depends on the qualifications and experience of the candidate but is generally comporable with what he would be offered in the university at the evel of lecturer or senior lecturer. Where applicable the Council will pay the employer’s contributions to super annuation. In the care of Senior Fellows appointed from overseas, financial assistance is given for travel at rates and under conditions determined by the Council. On appointment a Senior Fellow may apply for a grant in aid of his research. Thereafter he may apply to the Council or other bodies for further financial support. Travel grants are made to allow attendance at approved scientific conferences. Further details and application torms for each of the above awards are available from the undersigned at P.O.
