Impressive gallop by Mahal

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Mahal, from Cambridge, and the Takanini teams of R. Verner and the Tucker stable provided the few highlights of a RU'et morning at Trentham yesterday. Trials were run d i st anees near the middle of the course proper, which was firm. The track is generously grassed, and should provide good footing tomorrow.

Mahal earned a solid weight when the Matamata trainer J. s rode hl,n over a » even 1600 metres in imin 44 2-ssec, J*? e ! as ! 800 m in 52 2-ssec, and the last 600 m in 38sec. Mahal's time for the 1600 metres was appreciably faster than the other two gallops at the distance, those of Gold Ducat, a leading Thompson Handicap contender, and the Guest Sta? Handica P Th G o O^so D n U To t cker dd ß en F a " Inn 01 " *? lmin 46 l-ssec, the last 800 metres in 55 l-ssec. He has a reputation as a lazy track worker, however, and his recent winning race form looks a better guide to his prospects tomorrow.

Guest Star (Andrews) and his stablemate, Lexicon (Mallia). took Imm 46 3-ssec for 1600 metres, working comfortably over the last 800 m in 54 4-ssec and the last 600 m in 36 3-ssec ™ as ® satisfactory trial. Melody Belle (Andrews) ran a fast 1000 metres in 58 4-ssec down the chute. Sobieski (Andrews) ran 1000 metres down the chute with Showman (Canning) in lmin 0 4-ssec. Sobieski has been consistent in recent starts, but will have to improve to beat the form runners.

Show Gate (Crutchley), which seems to be thriving on her racing and travelling, worked smoothly over 800 metres in 52 l-ssec. the last 600 m in 37 2 ssec. Another southerner, the consistent Fiore (Lawrey), took 39sec for the last 600 metres of her work. Her clash with Flowalong in the Silverstream Handicap will be one of tomorrow’s features.

Star Keeper (Crutchley), a seven-year-old brother to Show Gate, ran 800 metres In 53 3 the last 600 m in 39 2-ssec. The Thompson Handicap runTurfcutter (Canning), went 800 metres In 49 3-ssec.
