Import rise of 52 p.c.

Payments for private imports for the 12 ; months ending July, 1974, are estimated as likely to reach 51879 m, an increase of 52.9 per cent over actual payments of $1229m for the 12 months ended July, 1973, says the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). - The latest calculation is I
made up of actual private import payments to the end of January, 1974, as released by the Reserve Bank, toi gether with projections, based on the orders-and-payments survey, for the remaining six ' months. 1 The survey indicates that , private import payments will ■ average sl6sm a month from February to April, 1974, and sl9om a month from May to : July, 1974. Corresponding , averages of actual payments a year earlier were slo2m , and sl22m, respectively. The results of the survey of overseas orders and payiments — which covers about I half of private imports —
