Minister criticised for “reluctance”
The National Party in Lyttelton is concerned at what it terms the reluctance of the Minister of Railways (Mr McGuigan) to do anything to help the port over the withdrawal of the Rangatira and the Holmlea from the inter-island run.
“As Minister of Railways, Mr McGuigan is giving incentives in the form of subsidies to the South Island users of rail transport to the detriment of the port,” Mr R. A. Gormack, chairman of the party in Lyttelton, said on Wednesday evening. “Mr McGuigan, in 1969,
criticised the previous Government for what he said was a run-down in coastal shipping services. He said the Government should have taken immediate action to reverse that trend, and he promised that there would be a ‘revival’ of coastal shipping under a Labour Government.” . Mr Gormack said that this was a clear example of Mr McGuigan’s n<st living up to his election promises. Nothing had been heard from him about the decision of the Union Company to drop the Rangatira and the Holmlea from the run.
